Ewen is a professional musician based in the Oxford area. As well playing Jazz in various settings ranging from duos to big bands he teaches saxophone in one of the UK’s top schools. Another sideline and passion is vintage saxophones – which he repairs and restores. In fact, this latter activity is an important ingredient in the kind of sound which he produces, which has been described as “warmly redolent of the late 1950’s” (Oxford Mail). Although he performs mostly on Tenor Saxophone, he also plays Baritone, Alto and Soprano saxes and Flute.
His performance credits include playing with some top names from the British Jazz scene, including guitarist Jim Mullen, trumpeters Steve Waterman, Eddie Severn and Kenny Baker. He has also played in one of the UK’s top big bands, the ‘Fat Chops’ band, several time winners of the National UK big band awards.
His groups always feature professional musicians of the highest calibre. With regard to repertoire, his bands can play a range of material ranging from classic swing era tunes (eg. Take the A Train, I Got Rhythm etc), through slightly more modern standards (Have You met Miss Jones, If I Were a Bell, I Could Write a Book etc), Sinatra material (I’ve Got You Under my Skin, Witchcraft) through to 60’s Stan Getz Bossa Nova territory (Ipanema, Corcovado, Desafinado). With regard to more danceable material, they play some of the more popular 60’s Funky/Bluesy tunes (Cantaloupe Island, Watermelon Man, Work Song etc.). They also perform more modern contemporary funky material penned by, for example John Scofield (Green Tea, Let The Cat Out, I’ll Take Les). They can be employed to play in a range of situations ranging from cool background sounds through to a more upfront situation where the audience could listen and dance to hard driving shuffles, and rock/funk grooves.
